Café Scientifique is returning this season with a series of informal talks that bring scientific topics to the public in a relaxed, conversational setting. These talks are led by Lithuanian scientists eager to share their knowledge in an accessible way, allowing everyone to engage with current scientific ideas and developments over a cup of coffee or a glass of wine.

The first talk of the season, "Light from Lithuanian Lasers," will take place on 17 September 2024 and will feature Prof. Domas Paipulas from the Laser Research Centre at Vilnius University. Prof. Paipulas will explore the science behind lasers, devices that are now found in many aspects of daily life, from medical applications to telecommunications. Although lasers are common, their underlying technology and the scientific achievements that make them possible are less well known.

This talk will highlight Lithuania's significant contributions to laser technology, tracing the role of Lithuanian scientists and engineers in advancing this field. Prof. Paipulas, who works on laser micromachining and studies how ultrashort laser pulses interact with materials, will explain the principles of laser technology in clear terms and discuss why Lithuanian lasers stand out in the global scientific community.
