Project name: „Investigation of two-dimensional optical lattices with sub-wavelength barrier widths”

Project No. 09.3.3-LMT-K-712-22-0078

This project has received funding from the European Social Fund under the No. 09.3.3-LMT-K-712 “Development of Competences of Scientists, other Researchers and Students through Practical Research Activities” measure under grant agreement with the Research Council of Lithuania (LMTLT).

Duration: from 2020-11-03 to 2021-04-30

Supervisor: prof. Gediminas Juzeliūnas

Student: Edvinas Gvozdiovas

Summary: during this research activity, the student will investigate novel ways to form two-dimensional optical lattices for ultracold atoms, where interfering laser beams are used to create optical transitions between internal atomic states. Ultracold atom research is important on a fundamental level, as well as for applications in state-of-the-art high-precision measurements and quantum simulators. Ultracold atoms can be used to emulate condensed matter and other complex systems, which helps improve our understanding of these systems.

Aim of the project: the student will be acquainted with ultracold atom physics. He is expected to develop a description of the dynamics of an ultracold atom in the Lambda configuration of energy levels, affected by one-dimensional standing waves. Using the one-dimensional methodology as a basis, a description of the band structure and single-atom dynamics for two-dimensional optical lattices will be established.
